🌟 ESL Lesson: Adverbs (Beginner–Intermediate)
1️⃣ Warm-Up (5–10 minutes)
Write on the board:

Ask:

What is different?

Which sentence gives more information?
Explain:
👉 An adverb gives us more information about a verb (action).
It tells us how, when, where, or how often something happens.
2️⃣ What Is an Adverb?
📌 Definition:
An adverb describes:
-
a verb
-
an adjective
-
another adverb
But today we focus on adverbs that describe verbs.
Example:
-
He runs quickly.
-
They speak softly.
-
She works hard.
3️⃣ Types of Adverbs
🟢 1. Adverbs of Manner (How?)
Most common for ESL learners.
Often end in -ly
| Adjective | Adverb |
|---|---|
| quick | quickly |
| slow | slowly |
| careful | carefully |
| happy | happily |
Examples:

She drives carefully.

He speaks slowly.

They laughed happily.
⚠️ Not all adverbs end in -ly:

fast
-
hard
-
well (good → well)
Example:

He runs fast.

She sings well.
🔵 2. Adverbs of Frequency (How Often?)
Put these before the main verb:

| always | I always wake up at 7. |
| usually | She usually drinks coffee. |
| often | We often play football. |
| sometimes | They sometimes eat pizza. |
| never | He never smokes. |
Special rule with “be”:

She is always late.

They are never tired.

🟡 3. Adverbs of Time (When?)
Usually at the beginning or end of a sentence.

I will call you tomorrow.
-
She arrived yesterday.
-
We are studying now.
🟣 4. Adverbs of Place (Where?)
Usually after the verb.

Come here.

She looked outside.

They went home.
4️⃣ Word Order Practice
Write incorrect sentences and let students fix them.
❌ She drives carefully always.
✅ She always drives carefully.
❌ He eats never vegetables.
✅ He never eats vegetables.
5️⃣ Guided Practice (Pair Work)
Students complete:

❌ He speaks very good.
✅ He speaks very well.
❌ She runs very fastly.
✅ She runs very fast.
Explain:
Some words do not use -ly.
