Exercises and Examples with the Present Simple Tense

🎯 Objective

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Recognize and use the Present Simple tense to talk about daily habits and routines.

  • Form correct affirmative, negative, and question sentences using the Present Simple.

🗣️ Step 1: Warm-Up (5 mins)

Activity: Discussion or quick survey

  • Ask: “What do you do every day?”

  • Write a few sample answers on the board:

    • I wake up at 7 a.m.

    • I eat breakfast.

    • I go to school.

Goal: Get students to naturally use present simple verbs before explaining grammar.

🧩 Step 2: Grammar Explanation (10 mins)

Form:

  • Affirmative: Subject + base verb (+ s for he/she/it)

    • I play football.

    • She plays football.

  • Negative: Subject + do not (don’t) / does not (doesn’t) + base verb

    • I don’t play football.

    • He doesn’t play football.

  • Questions: Do/Does + subject + base verb?

    • Do you play football?

    • Does she play football?

Usage:

  • To talk about daily habits, routines, or general truths.

🧠 Step 3: Vocabulary – Daily Routines (5 mins)

Teach or review words such as:

  • wake up

  • brush teeth

  • have breakfast

  • go to work/school

  • eat lunch

  • do homework

  • watch TV

  • go to bed

🏃 Step 4: Practice (15 mins)

A. Gap Fill Exercise:
Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb.

  1. I ______ (wake) up at 6:30.

  2. She ______ (not eat) breakfast every day.

  3. ______ you ______ (go) to the gym?

B. Pair Work – Interview:

  • Students ask and answer about their daily habits.

    • “What time do you get up?”

    • “Do you drink coffee in the morning?”

  • Then, they report about their partner:

    • “Maria gets up at 7. She doesn’t drink coffee.”

✏️ Step 5: Production (10 mins)

Task: Write a short paragraph titled “My Daily Routine”.
Example:

I wake up at 7 o’clock. I brush my teeth and have breakfast. I go to school at 8. In the afternoon, I do my homework. I watch TV in the evening and go to bed at 10.

🔍 Step 6: Review (5 mins)

Ask a few comprehension questions:

  • What time do you get up?

  • Does your teacher drink coffee?

  • What do you do after dinner?

Reinforce the rule about -s for he/she/it.
